Maryland Launches Climate Technology Fund to Support Diverse Founders
The Maryland Energy Innovation Accelerator (MEIA), a program of the Maryland Clean Energy Center (MCEC), took a bold step forward in advancing climate technology innovation with the launch of their new Climate Technology Founders Fund. This exciting initiative, established through Senate Bill 0960, aims to empower a diverse range of entrepreneurs working on solutions to combat climate change.
Building on a Strong Foundation
MEIA’s approach goes beyond mere funding. The accelerator has created a robust ecosystem that connects Maryland’s brightest minds – inventors, researchers, founders, and entrepreneurs – with strategic partners, local business executives, and service providers. MEIA’s comprehensive national network helps in building the startups executive team and advisors to help them reach the next step. As Ben Margolis, Director of MEIA, notes, “While we have worked with connecting teams to investors in the past, we are now able to invest in those companies as a direct part of MEIA’s program.”
Maryland’s Climate Innovators, Ready to Scale.
The Climate Technology Fund is exclusively for Maryland-based ventures. If you’re building a company within the state and your core mission is developing climate technology, this fund is designed for you. MEIA is seeking ventures that can demonstrate:
- An Experienced and Committed Team: Let’s face it, tackling climate change is a marathon, not a sprint. MEIA is looking for teams with expertise, passion, and dedication to see their vision through. They want to see a team that can execute.
- Innovative Technology: MEIA is interested in disruptive, innovative technologies that can make a significant impact and have a long-term competitive advantage and a viable path to commercialization.
- Provable Market Opportunities: The fund seeks ventures with a clear understanding of their market, and a demonstrable demand for their climate solutions.
- Impact: The fund is aligned with the State’s climate goals while making a stronger Maryland economy. Ventures should demonstrate how their success will create positive climate impacts and generate economic benefits for the state of Maryland.
A Fund with Purpose
What sets this fund apart is its dedicated focus on supporting small-, minority-, women-, and veteran-owned businesses (SMWVOBs) in the climate technology sector. The fund recognizes that innovation comes from all corners of society and seeks to provide crucial financial support to traditionally underrepresented founders who are developing groundbreaking technologies, products, and services to address the climate crisis.
A Unique Opportunity
Katherine Magruder, Executive Director of the Maryland Clean Energy Center, shares an optimistic outlook: “I am immensely proud of the work that MEIA has done. We’ve created over 60 jobs, millions of dollars of investment for companies, we’ve assisted over 100 companies through their initial stages of development.”
This initiative represents Maryland’s commitment to becoming a leader in climate technology innovation while simultaneously promoting diversity and inclusion in the startup ecosystem. The new Founders Fund will be overseen by an investment committee appointed by the Maryland Clean Energy Center (MCEC), ensuring proper governance and strategic deployment of capital.
