Smart Grid & Meters

The Smart Grid
Maryland has started rolling out a new system called the “smart grid” to manage electricity better. A “smart grid” refers to an electricity delivery system that uses digital technology, allowing for two-way communication between energy consumers and the companies that deliver energy. Smart grids can quickly respond to changes in electricity demand and supply, helping to prevent overloads and reduce outages. During times of high demand, the smart grid can automatically shift energy loads and balance supply to avoid overloads.
Electricity usage can be monitored and controlled from the point of generation to usage in real-time or near real-time. Managing the transmission, distribution, and consumption of energy has become much easier thanks to innovative technologies. Maryland is one of the leaders in grid modernization.

Smart Meters
The smart grid relies on smart meters, which are digital meters installed at customers’ homes. These meters provide information on electricity, gas, or water use, and detect outages. They help consumers see how much energy they are using at various times of the day, allowing them to adjust their usage during peak times to save money. As more smart meters are installed, electric companies will introduce new ways to help people use less energy and save money.
Utilites can offer programs that incentivize consumers to reduce usage during peak times, called Demand Response, using data from smart meters to identify and reward those who participate.
