Retail Choice
In Maryland, your local utility is responsible for delivering electricity to your home. They can also supply electricity, but you may have the option of choosing a different company for your electricity supply.
If you decide to go with a different supplier, you will still pay your local utility for delivering the electricity, but you will pay the new supplier for the electricity you use. Most of the time, these two charges will appear on the same bill from your local utility. However, sometimes you might get two separate bills – one from the utility (electricity provider) for delivery charges and one from the supplier (electricity supplier) for the electricity.

Provider vs. Supplier
Electricity Provider: This is usually your local utility company (i.e., BGE, PEPCO, etc.). They are responsible for delivering the electricity to your home through their network of power lines. They maintain the poles, wires, and meters that bring electricity to your doorstep. Even if you choose a different electricity supplier, your local utility company remains your electricity provider, ensuring the power reaches your home.
Electricity Supplier: This is the company that is responsible for producing or buying the electricity you use. You can choose your electricity supplier based on who offers the best rates or on renewable energy options.

Evaluating Suppliers
Taking a little time to do this research can help you make the best choice for you and your home.

Price to Compare
Look at prices from different suppliers, including the one you currently use, to make sure you are getting the best deal from your potential new supplier.
Check Suppliers
Before signing with any supplier, check with the Maryland Public Service Commission to make sure they are licensed, which is required to do business in the state. The Maryland Public Service Commission maintains a list of licensed electricity suppliers and allows you to compare the supply price of the utility and electric suppliers.

Consumer Protection
Protecting yourself in any retail transaction is crucial, and this includes dealing with energy suppliers.
Here are some key tips to keep you safe:
- Be Cautious of Deceptive Practices: Some suppliers might try to trick you into signing up for their service. Always be cautious and don’t agree to anything you do not fully understand.
- Watch Out for Higher Prices: Retail suppliers can charge more than your regular utility company. Make sure you compare costs.
- Protect Your Information: Never show your utility bill or give out your utility account number or Customer Choice ID to a sales agent.
- Read Before You Sign: Don’t sign any contract that is incomplete or confusing. Make sure you understand everything before agreeing.
