MECIP Among Select Few Awarded in Nationwide Initiative, Boosting EV Charging Access in Rural, Urban, and Disadvantaged Communities Across Maryland
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Maryland Equitable Charging Infrastructure Partnership (MECIP), led by the Maryland Clean Energy Center, has been awarded an additional $33 million in federal funding to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across Maryland. This investment builds on a previous $15 million award, further accelerating the state’s commitment to clean energy and equitable access.
“Electric vehicles aren’t just redefining how we travel — they’re also reenergizing our state’s economy,” said Maryland Governor Wes Moore. “Investments in EV charging technology will help us create jobs, drive growth, and build a more sustainable future. We don’t have to choose. And in partnership with federal leaders and state advocates, we are pursuing all three of these goals at once.”
The Maryland Clean Energy Center, along with its partners, will receive $33 million to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 29 locations across the state. These new stations will expand EV charging access in rural, urban, and underserved communities along an Alternative Fuel Corridor. The project will also create jobs through workforce development programs, including an EV charging franchise model and crowdfunding pilot, while training local apprentices and electricians from IBEW Local 24 to build and maintain the new stations. This initiative will help position Maryland as a leader in the nationwide shift to electric vehicles.
“The Biden-Harris Administration has been clear about America leading the EV revolution, and thanks to the historic infrastructure package, we’re building a nationwide EV charger network to make sure all drivers have an accessible, reliable, and convenient way to charge their vehicles,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. “The awards that we’re announcing today will build on this important work and will help ensure that the cost savings, health and climate benefits, and jobs of the EV future are secured for Americans across the country.”
This funding is a major step forward in Maryland’s clean energy transition, ensuring that all residents, regardless of income, can benefit from cleaner, more sustainable energy. The Maryland Equitable Charging Infrastructure Partnership will focus on bringing EV charging to communities that have historically been left behind. This initiative supports Governor Moore’s climate goals and contributes to Maryland’s growing clean energy economy, driving both environmental progress and economic development across the state.
The MECIP partnership brings together a diverse group of collaborators, including the University of Maryland’s Build America Center, Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), Francis Energy, Shell/Volta, Lightility, Citizen Energy, Avanza, Apexx Adams Transportation, and IBEW Local 24/JATC. The partnership also involves key government partners from Baltimore County, Baltimore City, Frederick County, Garrett County, Howard County, Montgomery County, Queen Anne’s County, and the cities of Havre de Grace, Rockville, and Salisbury. Together, these partners are working to expand equitable access to electric vehicle charging infrastructure across Maryland.
This new award comes as the Maryland Clean Energy Center (MCEC) marks its 15th anniversary. Since its founding, MCEC has driven Maryland’s clean energy progress by leveraging over $204 million in private capital against approximately $14 million in public funding and securing over $100 million in grants. Through its efforts to accelerate companies, create jobs, and provide financing and grant opportunities, MCEC has played a pivotal role in advancing the clean energy transition across the state, propelling Maryland’s clean energy economy to new heights.
