Wonder what the generation / fuel mix is for the basic service provided by your utility?
Although it varies slightly by utility (see table), about half the electricity supplied throughout the state and the Mid-Atlantic region comes from mining, transporting and burning coal, which is widely viewed to be a major emitter of harmful gases that pollute the region’s air, water and land. Burning coal is also widely viewed to be a cause of global warming. Three recently enacted laws are designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Maryland:
- Maryland Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Act of 2009
- EmPOWER Maryland Energy Efficiency Act of 2008
- Maryland’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). The RPS mandates that 20 percent of Maryland’s electricity be generated from renewable sources by 2022.
