Clean Energy Technologies

Clean energy means all technologies and practices that promote the production of energy through the use of sustainable resources while encouraging energy efficiency.

  • Energy Efficiency: With simple steps, we can reduce our energy costs by up to 25%. It’s the easiest path to reducing carbon emissions while boosting the bottom line for homeowners and businesses.
  • Solar: On an average summer day in Maryland, the sun generates more energy than the power plants in the state produce in one year. Installations of every scale can help reduce demand on Maryland’s power grid and delay the need for new fossil fuel power generation.
  • Geothermal: It’s not all volcanoes and geysers. The earth’s constant ground temperature of 55° can provide home heating and cooling and systems that consume less energy.
  • Wind: The strong and steady winds of the mountains and the shore have large-scale generation potential, but small-scale windmills can also be used to power a business, a home, or a farm.
  • Biomass: Algae, animal and plant wastes, and even landfill waste can capture CO2, produce fuel, and generate power – and Maryland researchers are leading the way.
  • Waves and Water: Emerging technologies harness natural wave and tidal motion from the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake for power generation – without destroying critical habitats.
  • Smart Energy Investments: Energy efficiency, renewables, and alternative-fuel vehicle technology are growing fast in Maryland.
